Emory's LibGuide on LibGuides: Best Practices & Guidelines for Creating and Maintaining LibGuides

An internal guide for Emory Libraries.

Adding Images - Tips

1. CONTEXT- Images can immediately help your LibGuide user orient and add context to your text.

For example, an Intro to Shakespeare Guide with an image, tells the student a great deal at first glance.

Consider whether or not an image would add context to your text. It's okay for an image to be used purely for decorative purposes, but don't let your images detract from the text.

2. COPYRIGHT- Remember that images are subject to copyright. (https://guides.libraries.emory.edu/main/Images/copyrightandpermissions)

3. CITE IMAGES- Consider add citation information to your images (https://guides.libraries.emory.edu/main/Images/citingimages

4. RESIZE- Crop or resize your images if necessary. Images that have large dimensions tend to be large files - which means it takes longer for them to load.  You can use a tool like Web Resizer.

5. NAMING FILES- Use descriptive file names.

  • Good: LibGuide Image of Shakespeare.jpg

6. ALT TEXT - Add alternative text for web accessibility. Alt text (alternative text), also known as "alt attributes", “alt descriptions", or technically incorrectly as "alt tags,” are used within an HTML code to describe the appearance and function of an image on a page.  Alt tags will be displayed in place of an image if an image file cannot be loaded.
