Gay Activists Alliance (1970-1983)

The Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) was founded in New York City in December of 1969 shortly after the Stonewall riots. Its founders were dissident members of the Gay Liberation Front who wanted to form a militant, non-violent organization dedicated to civil and social rights for gays.

This collection contains correspondence and records of all of its committees. There is also a topical file of miscellaneous records arranged by subject. The records document the organizations struggle to obtain fair housing and employment legislation for gays in New York City and State, the repeal of legislation respecting sodomy and solicitation, the ending of police harassment and entrapment of gays, and its role as a leader in promoting the development of gay rights groups in other cities.
