On December 10, 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to Jimmy Carter “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Jimmy Carter has focused on and conducted conflict mediation in more than a dozen countries. In 1978, He played a critical role in the Peace Talks between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin held at the Presidential Retreat, Camp David, which resulted in the signing of an Egyptian- Israeli Peace Treaty. He also has sent more than a hundred Election Observation Missions to the Americas, Africa and Asia to further peace and democratic elections.
