Being the President of the United States is arguably the most important and powerful position with the most responsibility a person could ever have. Jimmy Carter achieved this and yet he is thought of as being a humble, ordinary and caring man, an image that he cultivates. Since 1984, Jimmy Carter has been heavily involved and the spokes person for Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that gathers together volunteers to build houses for people who would ordinarily never have one. There are multiple pictures of Jimmy Carter using a hammer and sporting blue jeans and a toolbelt while building houses for needy families. He is one of the few Presidents who did not wear Brooks Brothers' suits while in the White House.
Jimmy Carter has worked with volunteers to build houses for the poor in NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Miami, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Houston, Detroit etc. Jimmy Carter's "Builds" were a yearly event and not just a one house project. President Carter would gather together 150 volunteers or more and build multiple houses, sometimes twenty, fifty even one hundred and fifty houses over the course of a week. His "Builds" were not just limited the the United States either. President Carter had his "Builds" projects in South Korea, Mexico, Cambodia, Canada and other foreign countries.as well.
Below are links about Habitat for Humanity as well as videos of President Carter and Rosalynn during the builds and a complete list of all the "Builds" that Jimmy Carter led during over thirty four years..
