Jimmy Carter - A Celebration

The Carter Center

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter

After his Presidency of the United States was done, Jimmy Carter's career was far from over. He still had great plans and aspirations of making a difference and sought to continue improving the lives of people not only the United States, but throughout the World. The way he planned to achieve this was by founding The Carter Center in 1982 with a close relationship to Emory University. The Carter Center was first housed in the Woodruff Library at Emory, but The Carter Center has continued to grow every year since then and now has partners to help it achieve its goals all over the world. President Carter's wife Rosalynn was with him every step of the way in building the organization and is listed as a Carter Center co-founder.

The Carter Center in it's own words is a "nongovernmental organization" that "has helped to improve the lives of people in more than 80 countries by resolving conflicts; advancing democracy and human rights; preventing diseases; and improving mental health care."  It is a leader in the eradication of and elimination of disease. Speaking on behalf of The Carter Center, President Carter said "we believe that access to healthcare is a human right, especially among poor people afflicted with disease who are forgotten, ignored and often without hope." "It has monitored 115 elections in 40 countries, helping to ensure democratic elections that reflect the will of the people".
