This is a guide to using the Emory Woodruff Library

What are the Stacks

Stacks refer to the main library shelves in a library. The Emory Robert W. Woodruff Library the stacks are on floors 4-8. These are located in the Stacks tower. 

How to read Library of Congress Call Numbers

Items in the Emory Woodruff can be found using Library of Congress call numbers. This system groups items with similar subjects together. Each book has a unique call number that can usually be found on the spine of the book. When researching a certain topic, you will be able to find items of interest in the same area. 

Here is short guide to reading Library of Congress Call Numbers

PS First Letters: The first letters represent the general subject. 
3568 Numbers that follow the letters: Following the letters is a 1-4 digit number sometimes followed by a decimal point. These numbers define the subject of the book
U3615 L684 Cutter Number: The cutter number indicates the author, title, or subject of the book.
2016 Year number: The edition of a book is the next part of a call number. The year of publication follows the cutter number to indicate the edition.

How to Find items in the library

Call numbers are usually found on the spine of a book. Search for items using the Emory Library catalog. Your search will tell you the library location, the call number and whether or not the book is available for check out. 

The following list includes the Library Congress Classifications of Subjects and the floors they can be found on in the library.

Finding DVDs, CDs, and Music Books - Music and Media

The Marian K. Heilbrun Music and Media Library is located on Level 4 of the Woodruff Library building. This branch provides visual, sound, and print materials and online resources. 

Library users are able to borrow: 

  • Books
  • Music Scores
  • DVDs
  • Vinyl Records
  • CDs
  • VHS
  • Audiocassette

Note: DVDs, CDs, Audiocassettes, and VHS tapes in the library collection are not available for browsing. Please request these items before coming to the library. 


The Music and Media library also provides access to multiple music and streaming databases. The library currently subscribes to Naxos and Alexander Street Press. It is also subscribed to multiple streaming services which can be viewed here: https://libraries.emory.edu/materials/films-and-videos.

The call numbers for books and musical scores in the Music and Media Library start with "M" and "ML". 

 

 

 

Reservable Spaces

There are a variety of spaces that can be reserved in the library. These include study rooms, audio production spaces, and conference spaces. Emory students, staff and faculty can reserve: 

  • Individual study rooms
    • These rooms are private study spaces for students that can be reserved for as little as 30 minutes to a maximum of 3 hours. They are to be used by only one person at a time. 
  • Group study rooms
    • These rooms are for three or more students to study. They can be reserved for for a maximum of 3 hours. 
  • Graduate Study Rooms
    • These rooms are for eligible Laney Graduate School students that need research space and frequently use the library. 
  • Carrels
    • These spaces are open to graduate students and undergraduate honors students that frequently use the library. 
  • Faculty Studies
    • Library studies are available to faculty that need research space and frequently use the library. 
  • Audio production studios
    • Student Digital Life offers video, photo, and audio production and online streaming services through multiple studios. They can be reserved for up to 3 hours.
