Aomar Boum is a historian of modern North Africa. In this book, together with Nadjib Berber, an American-Algerian comic artist, he relates a chapter of the history of the Holocaust in North Africa, thus revealing a less-talked about aspect of the Nazi persecution of Jews. The creators relate the story of a German-Jewish political reporter Hans Frank covering politics in Berlin. He grows increasingly uneasy as he witnesses the Nazi Party consolidate power and decides to flee Germany. Through connections with a transnational network of activists organizing against fascism, Hans ultimately lands in French Algeria, where days after his arrival, the Vichy regime designates all foreign Jews as "undesirables" and calls for their internment. On his way to Morocco, he is detained by Vichy authorities and interned first at Le Vernet, then later transported to different camps in the deserts of Morocco and Algeria. With memories of his former life as a political journalist receding like a dream, Hans spends the next year and a half in forced labor camps, hearing the stories of others whose lives have been upended by violence and war. Aomar Boum and Nadjib Berber capture the experiences of thousands of refugees through the fictional Hans, chronicling how the traumas of the Holocaust extended far beyond the borders of Europe. They introduce the reader to the entangled histories of French colonialism and the Holocaust in North Africa, often marginalized in the field of Holocaust Studies.

Inspired by the resounding success of Abina and the Important Men (OUP, 2011), Mendoza the Jew combines a graphic history with primary documentation and contextual information to explore issues of nationalism, identity, culture, and historical methodology through the life story of Daniel Mendoza. Mendoza was a poor Sephardic Jew from East London who became the boxing champion of Britain in 1789. As a Jew with limited means and a foreign-sounding name, Mendoza was an unlikely symbol of what many Britons considered to be their very own "national" sport. Whereas their adversaries across the Channel reputedly settled private quarrels by dueling with swords or pistols - leaving widows and orphans in their wake - the British (according to supporters of boxing) tended to settle their disputes with their fists. Mendoza the Jew provides an exciting and lively alternative to conventional lessons on nationalism. Rather than studying learned treatises and political speeches, students can read a graphic history about an eighteenth-century British boxer that demonstrates how ideas and emotions regarding the "nation" permeated the practices of everyday life. Mendoza's story reveals the ambivalent attitudes of British society toward its minorities, who were allowed (sometimes grudgingly) to participate in national life by braving pain and injury in athletic contests, but whose social mobility was limited and precarious.

Originally published in a serialized form, this book is a classic graphic novel, which not only shaped the way the Holocaust is taught in colleges, but also how we think about graphic narratives, especially biographies and memoirs. It retells how and what the author learned from his father about his survival during the Holocaust in occupied Poland. The title relates to the graphics, which closely connects with the perspective of the father on his story of survival largely defined by the German racialized view of Jews. Jews, Germans, Poles, the French, and others are represented as humans only from the neck down, their heads being of different animals. Jews are mouse-headed men (Maus is the German word for mouse or mice) while Germans are cats and Poles are pigs drawing on the popular connotations these animals and the relationship between them carry. This technique echoes traditional Jewish techniques of representation; however, it is also in a dynamic dialogue with cartoons. It highlights the role of portrayal and memory in the study of the Holocaust.

Published quietly in 1978, Will Eisner's revolutionary literary work A Contract With God marked the invention of the modern graphic novel, took on a life of its own, and inspired a generation of "sequential artists." Will Eisner (1917-2005) saw himself as "a graphic witness reporting on life, death, heartbreak, and the never-ending struggle to prevail." The publication of A Contract With God when Eisner was sixty-one proved to be a watershed moment both for him and for comic literature.
