A guide for undergraduates undertaking an in-depth anthropological research project

Training at Emory

Woodruff Library Workshops 

  • A range of workshops on topics such as MAXQDA, Python, JavaScript, and project management, as well as more basic bibliographic management and research productivity skills. The schedule of workshops is updated regularly throughout the semester.  

ECDS Workshops 

  • Topics include working with R, Python, ArcGIS, and other more advanced topics related to data analysis tools and digital scholarship. 

Health Sciences Library Workshops

  • Workshops on planning and conducting systematic reviews, using PubMed, Open Science, and other topics. 

Training Beyond Emory

ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research is an intensive, hands-on training in statistical techniques, research methodologies, and data analysis. Short workshops focus on specific methodological techniques, such as:

  • Introductory and advanced statistical methods
  • Quantitative methods to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Network analysis
  • Machine learning
  • Mixed methods
  • R statistical computing environment

Four-week sessions include intensive instruction in specific quantitative methods and statistical techniques. Workshops include "Bayesian Modeling for the Social Sciences," "Race, Ethnicity, and Quantitative Methodology," and "Game Theory," among others.

The 2021 program will be online rather than in-person. Course schedules are being posted, and information about scholarships to cover attendance fees is also available.

Methods4All is an NSF-funded Cultural Anthropology Methods Program (CAMP) to support the training of Ph.D. students. The 3-week 2021 program will be online and the application deadline is March 15th!

Codecademy offers free basic modules and subscription modules in various coding languages.

American Anthropological Association  

  • Maintains a page with links to a variety of methods resources. This page can be a little out-of-date but there is still good information here.
