Deselection Process
The Oxford College Library considers which material to remove based on factors such as whether it still meets collection policy criteria, the physical condition of the item, and the relevance and obsolescence of content. It is an ongoing process needed for maintaining the health of our collection.
The Coordinator of Collection Maintenance oversees weeding projects alongside the Collection Development Team. All staff participate in the weeding process. Faculty consultation is minimal in this process. Librarians may seek to consult with specific faculty on a case-by-case basis, but to streamline the process, deselection is handled internally.
Materials are recycled in accordance with Emory libraries procedures when it isn’t practical or in a condition to be donated. The Library does not sell deselected items. Items may be given away on a case-by-case basis with the permission of the Director of the Library.
The Library does not withdraw materials on request. Deselection is a process composed of assessment and the physical withdraw of items. All materials considered for deselection follow this process, including those that may be requested for withdraw by the Oxford College community.
Materials may be chosen for deselection based on the following assessment: Retention Policies for Evaluating Collection, duplication, use, physical condition, multi-volume sets, and format.

Many reference works are issued in revised editions, and previous editions can usually be removed. Dictionaries are an exception to this rule, particularly unabridged versions. Another exception is any new edition that supplements rather than replaces an older edition, such as quotation books.
