Important Documents

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (General Assembly Resolution 217A  (1948): The foundation of international human rights law

Core International Human Rights Instruments:  You can filter the list by subject.  The OHCHR list also has other universal instruments related to human rights. Core instruments include:

  • International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)
  • International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD)
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
  • Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT)
  • Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)

European Convention on Human Rights: With protocols and cases of the European Court of Human Rights

Documents of the Inter-American system of human rights: Include:

  • American Convention on Human Rights
