Humberto Ak’abal
Humberto Ak’abal (1952-2019) was a Guatemalan Ki’che Mayan poet. He originally wrote in Spanish and started to compose poems in his native tongue in 1980s. His Ki’che language works were only published starting in the 1990s. Ak’abal received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2006. Notably, Ak’abal rejected Guatemala’s Premio Nacional de Literatura "Miguel Ángel Asturias” because he believed that Asturias encouraged racism against Guatemala’s indigenous peoples.
