MAXQDA 2018

Welcome

MAXQDA is a software program that allows you to code and analyze your qualitative research. It allows you to code faster and more efficiently.

*** This Guide is for an older version of MAXQDA from 2018. There is another guide for the more recent version, MAXQDA 2020. 

This Guide will help you:

  • Understand the basics of MAXQDA

  • Import your data

  • Learn how to do basic coding

  • Become competent in running reports on your coded data and exporting these reports

Melissa will resume in-person MAXQDA workshops in the summer of 2020.

Accessing MAXQDA on Campus

MAXQDA is available at the following locations on campus:

  • Learning Commons at Woodruff Library (MAXQDA is on the nine windows computers on the first floor).
  • Woodruff Health Sciences Library.
  • Tarbutton Hall (graduate student access only).

Purchasing MAXQDA Access

MAXQDA Standard will meet the needs of most qualitative researchers. It allows you to work with a variety of kinds of documents, including text, audio, pictures, and video.

  • MAXQDA for students and Ph.D. candidates:
    • MAXQDA Standard: Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research

      • $43 for 6 months for a single user license that you can download on 1 machine.

      • $83 for 24 months for a single license that you can download on 2 machines.

    • MAXQDA Analytics Pro: Includes MAXQDA Standard capabilities, quantitative text analysis, and statistical data analysis 

      • $92 for 12 months for a single license that you can download on 2 machines.

      • $115 for 24 months for a single license that you can download on 2 machines.

  • If you want to upgrade to MAXQDA 2020, it costs $260. 
  • You can compare versions of MAXQDA to find the best fit for you.
  • If you are an instructor teaching qualitative methods, you can get free course licenses for your students.

Opening up MAXQDA

When you open MAXQDA, this screen will  greet you. You will see your user name and you can choose to start a new project or open an existing one. Here, an existing project is chosen.

Saving and Backing Up

  • There is NO save button in MAXQDA. The software automatically saves when you move from one field to another.
  • You can save your MAXQDA project on a USB drive. Any computer with MAXQDA will allow you to open your saved project. 
  • In order to save your entire project outside of MAXQDA:
    • Go to the Home menu.
    • Click the tab, Save Project As.
