Complex Coding Query
This tool in MAXQDA allows you to look closely at your codes and to look for patterns, intersections, and proximity between codes. So for example, do certain codes have a tendency to show up near each other? Do certain codes seem to occur together frequently? Knowing that can help you in your analysis.
To get to the Complex Coding Query:
- Go to Analysis.
- Then go to Complex Coding Query.
- When you choose to run the Complex Coding Query, you first need to make a decision about what kind of analysis you will do. Your options are:
Please pay attention to:
- Function: What do you want to run.
- If you want to search in all documents or just activated documents.
- Whether you want to use sub-codes.
Here is what the Complex Coding Query looks like to start:
- You'll need to drag and drop codes into the box that appears after you choose a function Here, the search query is for the intersections between the codes sangoma and ancestor.
- Searching for the Intersections between these two codes means you are looking at the smallest common denominator between the two codes. If you were looking at the Overlap, you would be looking at the beginning of one code through to the end of the other.
- The search says that there are eleven coded segments that are intersecting.To look at these codes, you then click Start.
- All your intersecting coded segments are now present in the Retrieved Segments window.
- As always, if you click on a retrieved segment, it will open in the Document Browser.
- Here you can see the text highlighted where the codes intersect:
- You can also code your intersecting text with a new code if it is useful.
- You can now export these results.
