Date Created:The Qur'an or Koran, is the central religious text of Islam. Muslims believe that Qur'an is made up words revealed directly by God, in the Arabic language, to the last of His prophets and messengers, Muhammad, over a period of twenty-three years. It is organized in 114 chapters (Sūrah), which consist of verses (ʾAyah). Each chapter (with the exception of chapter nine) begins with the Bismillah, the collective name for the invocation "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful". For binding and reading purposes, manuscripts of the Qur'an are often divided into thirty equal parts, or sections, called Juz.
The Qur'an is divided into Meccan and Medinan surahs. Some of which was revealed to prophet Muhammad during his residence in Mecca (before the Hijrah), therefore they were called Meccan surahs. The other surahs were revealed to the Prophet during his residence in Madinah (after Hijrah), so they were called Medinan surahs.
For Muslims, it lays down the law, commandments, and codes for their social and moral behavior. It contains a comprehensive religious philosophy. In addition to the Qur'an’s religious significance, it is widely regarded as the finest work in Arabic literature and has significantly influenced the Arabic language.
