"Kitty", or Catherine Boyd
The Graves family papers Account Book, Oxford Store, 1842. This 1842 merchant’s account book includes entries for items purchased by Kitty, a slave woman owned by Bishop James Osgood Andrew, President of Emory’s Board of Trustees. Kitty is listed by name, while other female servants noted in the ledger are referred to only as “girl.”
Elzy and John (renamed Davis)
In an 1852 receipt, A.B. Calhoun of Newnan, GA, sold Elzy, a 30 year old enslaved women, to an individual with the last name of Davis. As part of that sale, Davis gave John, an enslaved teenager, to Calhoun. It is noted in the receipt that John, aged 15, was renamed Davis by Calhoun. A facsimile of the receipt is on display in the Calhoun Room permanent exhibition in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library.
Frank
In an 1856 receipt, Martha Welborn purchased Frank, an enslaved man, from an individual with the last name Steed. Additionally, under the last name Steed is another with the last name Candler. It is unknown whether Candler was instrumental in the sale or witness to the transaction. A facsimile of the receipt is on display in the Calhoun Room permanent exhibition in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library.
