Zotero - Reference Manager

A Reference & Citation Management Tool

Group Libraries Set Up

To share references you and your group members will need to create an account at Zotero.org. Put your Zotero account's Username and Password into your Zotero desktop Preferences under the Sync tab.

Back at Zotero.org create the group library and INVITE others to join the library using the email address they used to register with Zotero.

Save your references into the group library. When you sync to the Zotero server, the reference you added will be uploaded to the Zotero server. Then when the other group members sync, that reference will show up in the group library folder in their Zotero library.

Your group libraries will appear in your Zotero desktop application underneath your personal collections.

Best Practices for Group Libraries

Please see this research guide on best practices for group Zotero libraries from Carleton College's Gould Library.

Zotero & EndNote

You can share Zotero references with colleagues using EndNote or vice versa.  Both programs can read and write a standard citation file format called RIS, which means references can be converted back and forth with a few clicks.

Zotero to EndNote

  • To save your Zotero library for importing into EndNote, find the "Export Library" option via the Zotero menu. Choose RIS as the file type and pick a filename.
  • In EndNote, click "File" and then "Import." Click the "Choose File" button and select the file you just exported from Zotero. Set Import Option to "Reference Manager (RIS)" and click Import.

EndNote to Zotero

  • To export your EndNote library for use in Zotero, click "File" and then "Export." Set the output style to "RefMan (RIS) Export" and save it as a text file.
  • From the Zotero menu, select "Import."  Double-click the file you exported from EndNote. The new references will be added to a collection named after the imported file.
