CPLT 101 - The Traveling Babel Library

This guide is designed to assist the students in Professor Liang's Spring 2025 Semester course with their research

Find Books

You search the catalog for particular authors Jorge Luis Borges  or specific titles Stories of the Sahara

Keyword Search: Use keyword searching on a single term or to combine concepts (X AND Y) and to search for particular words or phrases that might appear in titles or notes or subjects: See examples below:

poetics and literature; china and chicano; travel and literature, Tower of Babel

Subject Search  In the library catalog, books, videos and other materials are assigned Library of Congress (LC) subject headings based on their content. If you find a book that looks useful go into the record for that book and look at the subject headings used to describe the book -- click on any of them -- these are hyperlinks that will take you to a list of books with that particular subject heading that we have at Emory.  Here is a sample list of relevant subject headings for this course.

CALL NUMBERS

Items in the Emory Woodruff can be found using Library of Congress call numbers. A call number is like an address. It is a combination of letters and numbers that indicates where an item can be found in the library.  Each book has a unique call number that can usually be found on the spine of the book. When researching a certain topic, you will be able to find items of interest in the same area

Here is short guide to reading Library of Congress Call Numbers

PS First Letters: The first letters represent the general subject.
3568 Numbers that follow the letters: Following the letters is a 1-4 digit number sometimes followed by a decimal point. These numbers define the subject of the book
U3615 L684 Cutter Number: The cutter number indicates the author, title, or subject of the book.
2016 Year number: The edition of a book is the next part of a call number. The year of publication follows the cutter number to indicate the edition.

REQUESTING A BOOK

If the book you need is checked out  by another borrower or is at the LIBRARY SERVICES CENTER or if we do not have it, don't fret! You have a few options.

  • If the book is checked out, you can place a recall request through Library Search. Make sure you are logged into your Library Search account and click on Locate/Request This Item. The recall period is ten days, but if you need it sooner than that,
  • You can request a title through InterLibrary Loan, who can borrow books, articles, and other materials from other libraries.
  • Emory students and faculty can also submit a purchase request if the library does not own the material you need for your research.
