Variables in MAXQDA

You can create document variables (for example, to code demographic information about participants represented in a document). You can also create code variables in MAXQDA24. In this section, we will only discuss document variables,

View and Create Document Variables

  • Click on the Variables tab in the MAXQDA top menu.

  • Click List of Document Variables. This launches the List of Document Variables window.

  • Click the New Variable icon to create a new variable.

  • Enter the variable name.
  • Choose the variable type. There are 5 types: text, integer, decimal, date/time, and Boolean (true/false).
  • Check missing value to enter a number or text to represent missing data for this variable.

For the integer variable type, check categorical to designate a variable that is a category or range (i.e., age: 18-35, time in minutes:30-60)

View & Edit lndividual Document Variables

To edit the variables of an individual document:

  • Right-click the document title in the Document Browser
  • Click Variables.

  • This launches a data editor instance for that document's variables.
  • Enter the data for each variable.

View & Edit All Document Variables

To view variables for all documents:

  • Click Data Editor for Document Variables under the Variables tab.

  • This launches the data editor for all document variables. You can view or edit variable data for your documents here.
