Child Development

• You will need to have 3 scholarly references for EACH section of your paper.
   
• Two references must be original empirical articles from scholarly developmental journals.
   
• One [reference] may be a scholarly chapter or book, not a textbook.
   
• At least two of your references must be from 2005 or later.
   
• ​Only one [of your references] may be a "classic," published before 2005.
   
• You will need to locate new references for each section of the paper. 
   
• Write your paper in APA style.
   
• You may cite information from your textbook primarily as background material; if you cite your textbook, it must be included on the reference page. 
   
• ​You may not use websites or Wikipedia or dissertations as references...

An empirical article describes an original research study.

Empirical articles will include abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references/bibliography sections.

To locate empirical articles in PsycINFO:

• Conduct an Advanced Search
• Go to the Methodology section on the lower right and select "Empirical Study" from the drop-down menu

Peer-reviewed Journal

• Journals that have all their articles carefully and systematcially reviewed by subject experts to insure that only the highest quality research is being published. 
   
• The University of Arizona has a good guide on characteristics that distinguish a scholarly journal from a non-scholarly (or popular) journal.
   
• Synonyms: scholarly journal, refereed journal, academic journal.    

Scholarly Chapter/Book 

• Scholarly books are those published by university-based presses or presses which adhere to high-quality academic standards for the books they publish. 
  
  
• Examples include university presses such as Cambridge University Press, Stanford University Press, Nebraska University Press, etc.).
  
  
• Examples of commercial scholarly presses include Sage, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley-Blackwell, Taylor & Francis, Kluwer, the American Psychological Association, and many more.  If you're not sure if a publisher is scholarly, ask a librarian.
