Foundations for Online Teaching

• The Emory Center for Digital Scholarship provides consulting expertise, project coordination, and a technology-rich collaborative space for faculty, staff, and students to incorporate digital tools and methods into research, teaching, and publishing.  Check out some of their digital pedagogy projects here, and learn how you can propose a project idea for your course here.  
• The Emory Libraries Scholarly Communications Office serves the faculty, students and staff of emory by assisting with copyright and scholarly communications issues and promoting open access.   Check out the post on their blog "Teaching with Copyrighted Materials".  
• The Emory Center for Faculty Development and Excellence maintains a Knowledge Hub of resources on various aspects of teaching and course design.  For example, check out Professor Hiram Maxim's video on using geolocative technology to develop a "tour" app.  

The University of Central Florida's Center for Distributed Learning developed a tool called the Objective Builder for helping faculty create measurable learning objectives for their course.   

Other Universities

Although not always geared toward the online student, other universities also maintain resources on assessing student learning.  

• The Vanderbilt Center for Teaching provides samples of questionnaires for gathering feedback from students.  
• Cornell University's Center for Teaching Excellence has an extensive guide on assessment.      

Online/Real-Time Assessment Tools

Some of the following tools are completely free, while others are free for basic use only.  

• Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) is a free tool that asks students to assess and report on their own learning, and on the degree to which specific aspects of your course have contributed to that learning.  Once you register (for free), you can modify the SLAG instrument so that it fits your own course design. 
• Poll Everywhere lets you poll a class in real time.  Students answer using their mobile phones, Twitter, or web browsers, and their responses appear live on the web or in a PowerPoint presentation.  The basic higher education plan, which allows for a poll of up to 40 users, is free.    
• Micropoll allows you to create polls that can be embedded into websites and learning management systems, like Canvas.  
• Socrative is an app for asking questions for instant student feedback or for launching quizzes. The basic higher education edition is free for up to 50 students.   

Non-Profit Organizations

• The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment published a report in 2011 entitled "Assessing Learning in Online Education: The Role of Technology in Improving Student Outcomes".  It is used by a variety of institutions, ranging from community colleges to large public universities.
