Oxford Course Reserves

Learn how to access course reserves at Oxford College Library!

Course Reserves for Faculty

Course Reserves is a library service that allows instructors to make course materials available to students in the library and/or online.

Because this service manages both physical and electronic items, Course Reserves provides your students with both information on physical reserves available at the library and access to online materials.

Course Reserves employs an online reserves management system that allows you to manage reserves for your course, and provides your students with information on materials available at the library and online.

Course materials can be organized according to timeframe, subject matter or any other designation.

All courses reserves materials are automatically accessible through Canvas.

If you are accessing course reserves off-Emory campus, you may need to log in to the Emory VPN to access databases. Visit https://it.emory.edu/security/vpn.html for more information.

For Fall 2024, the Oxford College Library can provide both physical and electronic reserves for your courses. If you plan to place items on course reserves, please send an email to the Oxford Course reserves team at: OXRESERVES@EMORY.EDU with your course name and number and items you would like on reserve.

Please send us your list of items as soon as possible.  This is to ensure that all items will be available in time for the first day of classesThis is especially important if you plan to use any films in your course.

Here are some links to online resources that Emory has available to assist you

E-Book guide:  This is an Emory Libraries guide that explains further about the e-books available at Emory and how to use them in your courses.  This is a great guide to share with your students.

Finding Open Educational Resources for Your Class:  The resources here will assist you in finding the right open educational resources (OERs) for your class.  These are free to use.

See below for a list of the streaming film collections available to Oxford students.

Kanopy Streaming: Thousands of streaming videos on all subjects from a wide range of suppliers

Academic Video Online: Alexander Street Press documentaries, ethnographies, etc.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting films for use in the classroom:

  •  Search any of the above databases and Library Search to see if the library already has access to the film.
  • Film licensing can expire! Even if you’ve previously used a film, it’s always a good idea to see if it is still available.
  • Always have a backup film lined up in case the library cannot obtain licensing to the requested film.
  • Commercial streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and others are designed for individual users only.  The library cannot provide institutional access to these.
  • Clips or portions of the film or program can be used.  Contact the Oxford Course Reserves Team for assistance.

Fulfillment Time

Please keep in mind that requests for streaming video can vary greatly by supplier and there are cases where the library has to negotiate a new license.  We always recommend having a backup plan in place.

Faster (1 week average)

  • The supplier provides access on their own platform which is already set up with us and they have a rapid turnaround time.
  • Examples: Swank Digital Campus, Kanopy, Docuseek2

Medium (2-4 weeks average)

  • We have an established relationship with the supplier and they usually have a good turnaround time, but we have to host on our own server.

  • Examples: Women Make Movies, GoodDocs, Grasshopper Film

Longer (1 month or longer)

  • Smaller distributors, especially when we do not have an established relationship.
  • Videos that do not have clearly identified licensors for streaming and require further rights research on our part.

The Oxford College Library has portable BluRay/DVD players available to checkout!  These players are region free and will play all region DVDs/BluRay discs.

These can be checked out at the library circulation desk where the course reserves are located, and you will need to agree and digitally sign the Oxford Library Equipment Agreement Form

Like all the other physical course reserves, these can be checked out for 3 hours and overdue fines are $1 per hour.

All content placed on Course Reserves must comply with U.S. Copyright law.

The Libraries will seek and pay permissions for materials when appropriate based on our guidelines.
