SPAN 422/JS 422 : Matza and Tortillas

This guide is designed to assist the students in Dr. Gold's Spring 2023 semester class with their research.

Welcome

Welcome to the "Matza and Tortillas" library research guide. This guide provides links to some useful resources for your research. It is not comprehensive, but intends to point the user to a variety of materials held at or through Emory.

Final Research paper (30%).

In the research paper (10-12 pp. of text, plus bibliography) you will have the chance to explore in greater depth a topic of particular interest to you. Students may choose to work on some aspect of Judeo-Spanish (Spain and/or Latin America) or Judeo-Latinx culture that is not specifically included in the course, or they may instead use as their point of departure any of the authors/texts/topics on the reading list. You will no doubt need to do some preliminary reading and research in order to decide on a topic and formulate a thesis, so start thinking about your project earlier rather than later.

April 5  Work on the paper will proceed in stages, after an initial consultation with me: submission of topic

April 12  Preliminary thesis statement/research question and tentative

May 1   Finished draft.

You have the option of submitting a rough draft no later than one week prior to the due date for the final draft (Apr. 24). Drafts are not graded, but students will receive feedback thatwill help them revise their argumentation, organization, and writing.

Grade: The grade for this essay will be based on the following criteria:

  • Clarity and persuasiveness of the argument
  • Organization of ideas
  • Ability to use primary readings to produce your own analysis
  • Definition of a thesis that is then supported by relevant examples;
  • Use of secondary research materials.

70% of the paper grade is based on content, 30% on writing (organization, proper citation and bibliographic formatting following MLA style, quality of written Spanish).
