CPLT 489 ENG 483 : No Time to Think! Boredom, Distraction, and Modern Life

This guide is designed to assist the students in Dr. Goodstein's Spring 2021 class with their research.

Find Books

One method of finding books is to do a keyword search  -  Enter the term boredom or combine terms such distraction and culture in DiscoverE (the library catalog) -- this will bring back any record from the catalog where that word or combination of words appear.

Another method is to do a subject search. In the library catalog, books, videos and other materials are assigned Library of Congress (LC) subject headings based on their content. Below is a list of some relevant subject headings related to this course.

Open DiscovereE  and chose Advanced Search.  Set the pull down menu by the first search box to "Subject" -- this type of searching helps you locate books on a certain topic

*Anxiety

*Boredom

*Distraction (Psychology)

*Leisure

*Meaning (Psychology)

*Melancholy

*Time

Electronic Document Delivery

Electronic document delivery is available for Emory faculty, grad students, staff, and undergraduates (detailed instructions). Library staff will scan a book chapter or article in a physical volume.

Document Delivery CAN NOT scan an entire book US Copyright law only allows 20% of a book to be scanned for "Fair Use."

Inter-Library Loan (ILL)

Using Interlibrary Loan (ILL), you can:

  • borrow books and more from other libraries
  • get copies of articles that Emory doesn't own.

You will be notified when your materials arrive (most materials are obtained within 2 weeks-- articles take much less time).
